I’m Jim Adams, a woodcarver, from Mounds, Oklahoma. I was born in Muskogee, Ok. , in 1952. We lived in a few smaller towns while I was growing up and I eventually landed in Mounds. I live in the hills west of town on ten acres where I get to see the sunset everyday it’s available.
My love for carving was ignited in the late 1970’s when I saw some of Willard Stone’s woodcarvings. Not too long after that I, by chance, caught a woodcarving show at a local mall in Tulsa. I knew I wanted to try my hand at it then. I think the first carving was a small canoe out of basswood. I later did a small sail boat which I still have.
I’ve been carving for about 35 years. About ten years ago I seemed to be drawn to do more and more faces. Now I can't hardly make myself do anything but faces. I love the expression, emotion and shapes of the human face. Although I am not Native American, I do love the culture and have done several pieces in that genre. I put faces on everything from logs to walking sticks. I recently put a face on a tree stump out by the road. I’ve never had any formal training or anything but have tried to always improve my work. |
